First Person Shooter - The Movie
13 September 2015 | by  (Canada) –
* Spoiler Free *

Just saw this at TIFF 2015 Midnight Madness. Judging by the constant applause and laughter throughout, the audience LOVED it. I thought it was truly INCREDIBLE and genuinely new... a landmark film. Hopefully that will be recognized without hindsight. I believe Hardcore has the chance to be Star Wars for this generation... or perhaps a Terminator or a Reservoir Dogs. I'm writing this to help ensure that happens. Context: I also thought Crank was great.

The ENTIRE movie takes place in FIRST PERSON point of view (POV). ALL 90 MINUTES. It never gets old and the POV remains a strength throughout. I never got motion sickness (and the movie moves fast - incredibly fast). After the movie, the director mentioned the Vimeo short would be unwatchably choppy on the big screen. 2 engineers spent 2 months creating a special rig with 2 magnetically stabilized GoPros to shoot the film. This new rig is the reason why the audience didn't get motion sickness.

I've never seen action like this. It's not just regular action scenes filmed in first person. It's superheroic parkour, fantastical fights, and video game gunplay all presented in first person. Seen from a regular angle, the action would likely be too cartoonish. The POV helps ground everything, making it more believable. Added Bonus: During many scenes you'll wonder how the POV camerman didn't get killed.

Hardcore is incredibly violent, but rarely nasty. People who play modern FPS's will not bat an eye, others will be shocked and appalled. Expect a lot of controversy when the older crowd expresses grave concern about this film, while the younger crowd rallies behind it. Expect marketing to exploit this generation gap.

Action aside, the movie has an unexpected sense of humour. Some driven by situations, some driven by characters, some thanks to the POV. There's not a lot, but what is there is gold - and a relief during all that action.

The main character, despite never appearing, is able to communicate a personality. I believe FPSs will steal the ideas presented here. The circle is complete.

Which brings me to Jimmy (Sharlto Copley)... Can't say much but he's easily as compelling as the action. His interactions with our hero (the POV) are not straightforward, and always intriguing. Somehow they form a bond, which winds up unexpectedly touching. Before the movie Sharlto said it was the craziest, hardest role he's ever done and it's easy to see why.

The bad? The overall plot is good but not great. The bad guy, beyond being powerful and evil, has less character than the POV. Despite some attempts, women are relegated to lesser roles. (I believe the good far FAR outweighs the bad)

Russian Hollywood has created the best first person shooter ever made. When POV becomes the new bullet time, you can thank Hardcore.

Useless Film - A flop Show
17 December 2015 |  (India) –
As expected, what else can a movie be which tries to copy a Hollywood film and as usual fails miserably.

It is a waste of time. This movie is a big time flop. Nothing special, no fun and doesn't even gets close to its Hollywood counterpart.

It is merely in news on fake propaganda and hype created by extensive advertising.

No point wasting time on a movie which you feel to walk out in the first half itself.

I was in a fix to choose between an English movie to watch or this one. I think i made a mistake to watch this one.

Right from the start this movie had lost the plot and continued that way, hence couldn't recover.

A Pointless Remake
6 December 2015 | by  (Malaysia) –
The film presents a number of impressive extreme sport actions set pieces with glorious parachutes or rock-climbing gear that will certainly excite the audiences but sadly the plot with poor pacing has turned this remake slightly pointless. It manages to break the action point based on the Ozaki Eight's fictional sets of highly dangerous attempts of worshiping the nature but fail in achieving several other points, most obviously when it lacks of engagement in between the characters while the existence of political subtext and the crime concept seems to be meaningless. Performance from the casts are overall fine but the decision to focus on the extreme adventures have totally neglected the potential of some supporting characters and the emotional development that cause the romance and friendship seems to be superficial. Visual effects are environmental breathtaking and stunning, the scores by Junkie XL are strong and inspiring yet all of these are insufficient to provide additional thrills to make the film superior than the original cult in 1991.

In the Heart of the Sea (2015)

A recounting of a New England whaling ship's sinking by a giant whale in 1820, an experience that later inspired the great novel Moby-Dick.

Director:

 Ron Howard

Writers:

 Charles Leavitt (screenplay), Charles Leavitt(story),

Stars:

 Chris HemsworthCillian MurphyBrendan Gleeson |

Storyline

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. "In the Heart of the Sea" reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath, as the ship's surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

A Very Angry Whale.
7 December 2015 |  (Sydney, Australia) –
'Moby Dick' is the well known adventure of a whaling ship and its crew, relentlessly hunting the legendary white whale that had been a proverbial thorn in any whaling expedition. But before Herman Melville wrote his most famous piece of work in 1850, the American author had received the inspiration for his classic from a real life whaling expedition thirty years prior. The true story of the Essex and its crew reverberated around the world and had the potential to destroy the whale oil industry at a time when the precious commodity was the 'electricity' of the day. Its use in everyday life was common and was the main source of heat and lighting in the nineteenth century. The hunt for the rich oil saw large numbers of whaling ships spending years at a time out at sea so the bright lights of towns and cities could burn before the introduction of electricity. How far we have all come, even from the recent past.

Ron Howard has always been a bankable Director. He has been at the helm of some truly delightful films in recent memory and has rarely provided the audience with a bad experience. His solid wisdom has enabled him to deliver a film that is concrete without being spectacular. Charles Leavitt's screenplay shadows that of the direction; it provides the opportunity for deep dialogue without ever pushing the boundaries of its cast, leaving the best performance to a CGI generated whale. Howard has been able to create an authentic nineteenth century atmosphere, with rich scenes full of all the wonderment's of a by-gone era but the film on a whole seems to lack an emotional impact that Herman Melville's story was able to achieve. 'Moby Dick' seemed to have an excitable expectation about it where as 'In the Heart of the Sea' failed to deliver any really memorable moments. This is not to say that Ron Howard's film is not watchable, it just has been unable to conjure up anything new.

The narrative focuses on the booming whaling industry out of Nantucket and its heavy reliance on whale oil to provide the energy that society needs to live through their everyday lives. The whaling ship 'Essex' is the pride of the fleet and has been commissioned for a new expedition for the growing need of the priceless liquid. The story is told through the eyes of Thomas Nickerson (Brendan Gleeson), who is the last survivor of the fateful adventure that took place thirty years before. His narration is for the benefit of Herman Melville (Ben Whishaw) who is compelled to write about the story. Nickerson centres his narration around Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth), the second in command of the Essex and a man that was born to be a whale-man. Chase is respected by his crew and is good enough to be the Captain in his own right but lacks the heritage to demand such a post. George Pollard (Benjamin Walker) is given the task of commanding the Essex and it isn't long before his personality clashes with that of Chase.

Cheap thrill faceplant

Throw together a few bad-ass looking guys and you get a bad-ass movie? If only directing was that simple. This reeks direct to DVD; bad acting with little or no coherent dialogue, bad lighting with the classic 2008 fake lens flare, zero character development etc. The list goes on. These days Hollywood movies are sadly relying on statistics, stitching together parts and dialogue from films that once did well. De Niro hits rock bottom of wooden acting smoking Vapes whilst lecturing a millennial how in the future no one will know what a real cigarette tasted like. ZZzzzz. This film is the reason why people pirate movies. Period. Times is money, and you're about to loose some.

Extremely surprised- intense and sometimes hysterical!
27 October 2015 |  (United States) –
First things first- I grew up with the Goosebumps books and TV show. When I saw the trailer pop up when I went to watch Minions, I expected it to be your typical horrible live- action/CGI adaptation of something that was good back in its day, but with Goosebumps, it's a fun, upbeat, hilarious and charming surprise. The only problems with the movie is that the visuals are a mixed bag(some are really cool and refreshing, some are cheap- Alvin And The Chipmunks quality CGI) and it tries to be hip, but otherwise, the movie's awesome! The action scenes really had me shocked on how creative they're set up to be(the ice rink Abominable Snowman sequence, the praying mantis chase) and the 3D really added to the imagination of the intensity. The comedy is also very witty, with most of it being sharp verbal gags and occasionally a goofy visual joke. Goosebumps is the most fun(excluding The Martian) I've had at the movies since Ant-Man, and it's good, clean, funny and intense entertainment that families will have a great time with. Stick around for a cool 3D credit sequence if you pay for the extra dimension.

Be prepared to have lots of fun.
10 December 2015 |   (Hampshire, England) –
I didn't go to scouts. In fact, I only ever went to one meeting of cubs, where I spent most of my time trying to pull a paper 'tail' out of the back of the other boys' shorts whilst avoiding having the same happen to me (they made me do it—it was supposed to be fun). I begged my mother never to send me there again.

Teenagers Ben (Tye Sheridan) and Carter (Logan Miller), on the other hand, have been scouts for almost as long as they can remember, but have serious reservations about continuing, concerned that it will kill their chances with the fairer sex. However, when a zombie outbreak occurs while they are on a camp-out with pal Augie (Joey Morgan), the lads get a chance to put into practise everything they have learnt while scouting, and realise that doing what they enjoy most is more important than how others perceive them.

Scout's Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse is undeniably crass: there's no meta, post-modernistic, self-referential irony involved (whatever that means)—just lots of gags about bums, tits and willies, which, as far as I'm concerned, equals a good time. This film managed to do what so many other horror comedies have failed to do—make me snort out loud with laughter more than once—and for that reason alone I hold it in high regard, but it also delivers those other two important ingredients of the genre: hot women and outrageous splatter.

Amongst the babes on hand are Halston Sage and Niki Koss as sexy high school pals Kendall and Chloe (the latter going beyond the call of duty for a scene where she receives oral pleasure from a zombie), a top heavy female cop turned zombie (actress unknown) who provides one of the funniest moments when her shirt is torn off, and gorgeous Sarah Dumont, who plays sexy cocktail waitress Denise and automatically enters my 'horror hotties in a tight white vest' Top Ten.

As far as the gore is concerned, there are lots of exploding heads (with one particularly jaw-dropping slow motion shot towards the end of the film) and plenty of severed appendages, including a hilarious scene involving the putrid penis of an elderly zombie. Although a fair amount of the effects are CGI, they are well executed.

With a film as gloriously daft as this, it's fairly pointless to pick holes in the script, so don't bother: just sit back and enjoy the whole ridiculous ride, from the silly pre-credits sequence involving a hapless janitor who likes to boogie, to the splatteric final act that ends with a bang.

Very Enjoyable
24 August 2015 | (United Kingdom)
As far as British comedies go, this was one of the best I have seen. Contending with the likes of The Inbetweeners and Mrs Brown's Boys the title stands it's ground.

Throughout the film the comedy is well timed with some unexpected outbursts and classic schoolboy/girl humour and it is not as corny as you might expect from a film based in Cornwall. The actors have done a good job of continuing their on-screen persona and have added their own flare to the roles.

The criticism I would give is that in some of the members of Class K there is not a lot of character development. But this is supported by the TV show where viewers of both the show and film will know many of these characters well, whereas an outsider like me couldn't even remember some of their names. This was partly due to the film's plot-line being very heavily based around Jack Whitehall's character, Alfie Wickers. And his testicles.

I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone wishing to have a seriously good laugh whilst learning just a little bit of History.

A compelling story can't make up for an artificial set up.
9 December 2015 |    (United States)
'Don Verdean' is the newest film from Jared Hess. Director of 'Napoleon Dynamite', 'Nacho Libre', and the upcoming 'Masterminds'. Needless to say, Hess is a wonder child of offbeat comedies that really don't have anything to do with anything. So, when I sat down to watch this film, the story came as a pleasant surprise. 'Don Verdean' seems to be Hess's first foray into legitimate, cinematic storytelling. Unlike his older films that are made to feel like a home video (in a sense) Verdean actually employs some surprisingly good cinematography to help tell its story. It's no Roger Deakins but this film actually looks like some effort was put into shot composition.

We follow Don Verdean (Rockwell) as he sides with a local church to try and hunt down religious artifacts. Artifacts that they believe, if found, will drive people to their church. As Verdean finds artifact after artifact the church he is employed by grows restless for a BIG discovery. Goliath's skull big. Feeling the pressure, Rockwell takes matters into his own hands. A robbed grave later, Don Verdean makes the "discovery" of a life time and his life spirals down from there.

The film still has that unmistakable quirkiness that Hess has built himself on but 'Verdean' proves that he is making strides into making noteworthy films. Aside from the films relatively impressive look the film is definitely a Hess movie. Its got the same unique comedy and ill timed character moments that make his other films classics.

But 'Verdean' has something his other films didn't. An ensemble cast. With Rockwell as the title character, Clement as his companion, and Forte as the films villain this should've been a knock out. But, unfortunately it isn't. It still has the offbeat comedy that many have come to love from Hess but it sacrifices a lot of it in the name of a story line.

There are multiple moments in the film where we get a deadly serious scene that are devoid of humor. Obviously you have to know when to let off the comedy gas pedal but for the first half hour of the film we barely get a laugh or two. It takes to long to actually get into the meat of the story. A story that, in fact, is pretty hilarious and ripe with religious commentary. But it makes the mistake that many first timers do, it takes to dang long to get off and going.

And, like many movies that are set up like this, 'Verdean' ends in a very contrived way. The film is moving a great pace and suddenly it's over. The conclusion comes out of no where and threw me straight out of the film. Like its rocky beginning, 'Verdean' can't seem to figure out how to end in a natural way. It makes the mistake of pushing its characters one way instead letting their personalities take them in a realistic way.

Yet, its story is surprisingly compelling. Living in a state where a church is literally on every corner, I may connect with this film more than others. That being said, I think 'Don Verdean' raises very valid points about what we as human beings believe in and how we jump between what's the most popular at that time. It displays how we seem to be so invested in theatrics that we forget to even think about what is being said. Without spoilers, there is a scene involving a press conference that is particularly effective.

It's nothing that hasn't already been said. But 'Don Verdean' approaches it in such a unique, monotone way that it just works. It makes use (more or less) of its great cast and delivers some hilarious commentary on religion. Its unfortunate that the film sacrifices its best quality in order to artificially build this film. It may not be the Hess film that many expect but it's an impressive stride forward in storytelling for him.
