Hardy terrific, film so so

I was really looking forward to this one; the trailers were great and, whilst I'm not one of those who glamourise the Krays (they loved their mums, would do anything for you blah blah blah), I do find it bizarrely fascinating how the Krays/Richardsons have passed into London folklore. Alas, it's a bit of a let down. Hardy throws himself into both roles, by turns amusing and scary as Ronnie and compelling as a Reggie trying to build an empire while struggling to keep his brother in check. But he is let down by a clunky structure, it takes a while to get going and subplots and characters are introduced and then discarded on a whim, an awful Frances Kray voice-over, and an uneven script which can't quite decide if it wants to be an American style gangster flick or tread the same path as The Long Good Friday, Get Carter et al. And who let Duffy and her nails down a blackboard voice back in? I really hoped we'd seen the last of her after that crap Diet Coke ad. The club scenes aren't quite working guys. I know, let's get Duffy, stuck a wig on her and she can caterwaul her way through some 60s classics. High five!!!

A lot of (great) moving parts that never quite come together.

Something that looks like a 'film', specifically this term and the aesthetic to which it implies, I feel has come to be expected of contemporary dramas/character studies. Mojave knows it. It looks to tick a lot of these archetypal boxes: jaded, frustrated characters, blatant motifs (the temptation of Christ?), a redemptive narrative, an undertone of despair that never loosens up until the end of the last arc. Yes with all these elements motivating it's narrative, the movie never achieves a sense of coherency; it's Hitchcockian one moment with it's intermittent key score, and then Fincher-esque the next with it's sweeping pans and use of negative space in shots. It's an actor's playground that, as charming and talented as all the individuals are, doesn't leave a lot for the audience to soak in, unless you really, really like angry, shout-y Mark Wahlberg, who is playing quite possibly the closest characterisation to his real life personality in this role. I never fully understood the goal of the protagonist... I guess it had something to do with doing the right thing and his daughter? Too much Tyler Durton syndrome in concepts like these I feel.

Bruce Willis does his usual under par performance.Which he seem to be doing a lot of lately. Gina Cerano certainly haven't been given much,for her MMA skills to work with. And the male lead is such a bad actor you laugh.Every time he knocks down someone,he takes a half a minute pause,just to gloat There's no chemistry between him and Gina,and they are suppose to be ex lovers.They try to convince you they were once a couple, with mixing some baby talk in between and talking in half sentences.Pretending they have long history together..But alas the chemistry is all wrong Whats worse is, every darn bad guy know MMA.no matter how low on the totem pole they are,they seem to be excellent figthers. And our male hero have to struggle to fight every last one of them,no matter how scrawny they are. And he is supposed to be super good,top of his class on all levels,who have been passed over several times for field duty. Remember the 80's? The direct to video kung fu/ martial arts action movies ,with Michael dudikoff,jean claude,Steven seagal,Dolph lundgren etc.When every bad guy they came up against knew martial arts? You had good elegant fighting scenes,with the camera way back. Heres the problem.Back in the days,that stuff worked.You were okay with every bad guy knowing kung fu,it worked,because it was that type of movie. With this movie it doesn't The fights are boring, and lousy choreographed. The characters are even worse ,the plot is boring,and predictable. Gina is reduced to being a sidekick, and ex girlfriend,and even her fights are way below par,for what you could expect from having her in a movie. Watch haywire instead. Gina have to struggle with beating up a lowe life henchman

Cheap thrill faceplant

Throw together a few bad-ass looking guys and you get a bad-ass movie? If only directing was that simple. This reeks direct to DVD; bad acting with little or no coherent dialogue, bad lighting with the classic 2008 fake lens flare, zero character development etc. The list goes on. These days Hollywood movies are sadly relying on statistics, stitching together parts and dialogue from films that once did well. De Niro hits rock bottom of wooden acting smoking Vapes whilst lecturing a millennial how in the future no one will know what a real cigarette tasted like. ZZzzzz. This film is the reason why people pirate movies. Period. Times is money, and you're about to loose some.
